 Independence Day

The 4th of July, 2011, will mark the 235th celebration of America’s independence from Britain.  In commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, each subsequent year has seen a display of patriotism all across the country.

In Bristol, Rhode Island, in 1777, the first official observance of Independence Day occurred as Revolutionary War soldiers fired 13 shots in the air at morning and night, one shot for each of the original colonies.  At the same time, Philadelphia held an Independence Day dinner for the original Continental Congress.

In 1870, Congress established Independence Day as an unpaid holiday for federal employees.  It wasn’t until 1938 that Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday.

We must not forget that the gift of freedom that has been handed down to us from our Founding Fathers and subsequent generations was earned, and continues to be earned, at a considerable cost.  The courage shown more than 230 years ago lives on in our brave soldiers who serve at home and abroad to protect the freedom our forefathers have worked tirelessly to provide through the years.

As we reflect on our history, it is important that we set aside our differences to celebrate this great country and honor the heroes who are serving and defending our freedom.  On this Independence Day, I encourage all Missourians to recognize the blessing of freedom that we have been granted.  Fly your flag and have a great weekend!
